A Nightmare on Elm Street is a 1984 horror slasher film. It is the first movie in the A Nightmare on Elm Street series. It was directed and written by Wes Craven. It stars Heather Langenkamp as Nancy Thompson, Johnny Depp (in his first major role) as Glen Lantz and Robert Englund as Freddy Krueger. The movie is mainly about the monster Freddy Krueger stalking children in their dreams where their parents cannot protect them.
The movie was a moderate box office success. It was made on a budget of $1.8 million and earned more than $26,000,000. A Nightmare on Elms Street was rated R by the Motion Picture Association of America.
In 1985, a sequel, A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge, was released. Six more sequels followed. The movie was remade in 2010.
