Plot[]

36 years after the events of the first movie, Lydia Deetz is the host of a TV show called Ghost House. While doing a segment, she sees a vision of Betelgeuse in the audience. She goes to the bathroom to take some pills. Rory, the producer of the show and Lydia's boyfriend tells her that she should stop taking them. Later on, Lydia's stepmother Delia asks her to come to the art museum that she works at in New York.

Delia tells Lydia that her father Charles has died after his plane crashed and later got eaten by a shark. Lydia and Rory try to get in contact with Lydia's daughter Astrid, who doesn't answer her phone. Astrid is mad at her mother for doing this ghost show since she doesn't believe in ghosts, and thinks even if they were real, why hasn't her mom contacted the spirit of her deceased father Richard who died in South America. Before leaving the museum, a man falls into the sewer to his death and wakes up in the neitherworld. A janitor in the afterlife gets shocked and lands on crates, awakening a woman who has been chopped into pieces. The woman staples herself back up and asks the janitor where Betelgeuse is. When he doesn't answer her, she sucks his soul, revealing her to be a soul-sucking demon.

Lydia, Delia and Rory arrive at the boarding school Astrid attends and tell her the news that her grandfather has passed away. She agrees to come to Winter River, Connecticut to attend her grandfather's funeral. Meanwhile in the neitherworld, Betelgeuse has started a bio-exorcist business with a bunch of men with shrunken heads called shrinkers, where he's friends with one named Bob. Betelgeuse goes to the office of detective Wolf Jackson who was a movie star when he was alive. He shows Betelgeuse a picture of the woman who sucked the janitor's soul. While Betelgeuse is shocked to see her, he lies and says he's never seen her before in his life or afterlife.

Charles funeral begins with the song Day-O being sung by a choir at it. After the funeral, Rory proposes to Lydia and wants to marry her on Halloween night which is two days from the funeral. While she doesn't think it's the right time, Lydia reluctantly agrees to marry Rory. An angered Astrid leaves on her bike, but accidently crashes her bike at the backyard of a teenage boy in a treehouse. He introduces himself as Jeremy, and Astrid tells him that Lydia is her mother. This delights Jeremy. Back in the neitherworld, the stitched-up woman sucks the soul of a ghost working at a local dry-cleaner. She steals a wedding dress and turns it black. Betelgeuse reveals to Bob that the stitched-up woman is his ex-wife named Delores. The two of them met during the black plague where they got married. On their wedding night, Delores poisoned Betelgeuse, but before he died, he butchered Delores with an ax. Betelgeuse then learns that Lydia has returned and seeks her hand in marriage once more.

On Halloween day, Astrid finds a flyer for Betelgeuse in the attic, along with the model town made by Adam Maitland. Sometime ago, Adam and Barbara found a loophole and were able to crossover. Astrid begins looking through a scrapbook and looks through pictures of her as well as her mom and dad. Lydia joins her, but then Astrid brings up Betelgeuse, causing Lydia and Delia to lock up the attic and tell her to never say that name again. Rory finds out what happened, and Lydia tells him about Betelgeuse. Rory says his name three times and the two of them are transported to a couples-therapy office, where Betelgeuse scares Rory. Lydia says home three times and she and Rory are brought back to the house, Rory thinks his encounter with Betelgeuse was only a dream.

That night, Lydia takes Astrid to Jeremy's house. The two of them start dancing together before they start floating. Astrid realizes that Jeremy is a ghost and wants her help to make him alive again by entering the afterlife, Jeremy promises that she'll see her father there. When Lydia learns from Jane that Jeremy murdered his parents and died while hiding in his treehouse 23 years ago, she hurries to his house, but is too late, as Astrid and Jeremy enter the neitherworld together by Astrid reading a ritual in the Handbook for the Recently Deceased. Lydia reluctantly summons Betelgeuse for help. Betelgeuse agrees only if Lydia will marry him. With no other options, Lydia accepts Betelgeuse's proposal. The two of them enter the afterlife and are alarmed by the police. Wolf Jackson begins a hunt for Betelgeuse for bringing Lydia to the afterlife, while Delores continues to search for him as well.

Astrid and Jeremy arrive at a train station called the Soul Train, where Jeremy reveals that he tricked her into switching places with him. Astrid is then being dragged to the train, where she's spotted by her father Richard who works at the station. Bob is then taken to the police station where Wolf asks where Betelgeuse is. He doesn't say, and is later left alone, where Delores sucks Bob's soul as well. Back in the land of the living, Rory is handing out treats for costumed trick-or-treaters, where the shrinkers start running out of a hole in the wall caused by Betelgeuse, Rory runs away in fear. Delia has a séance at Charles' grave and pulls out two snakes believing they are de-fanged, only for the snakes to bite Delia, killing her. Lydia finds Astrid being forced onto the Soul Train to the great beyond. She grabs Astrid and runs away with her, but the two of them are unfortunately sent to one of Saturn's moons where they encounter a sandworm, but with the help of Richard, they are able to save Astrid. When Astrid and her parents try to stop Jeremy from stamping the papers that will confirm that he and Astrid switched places, Betelgeuse pulls a switch that sends Jeremy to Hell where he burns for all eternity.

Lydia and Astrid thank and say goodbye to Richard and make their way back to Winter River. While in the afterlife waiting room, Delia asks Betelgeuse to return her to the mortal world. At a nearby church, Rory waits for Lydia at the alter to marry her. Betelgeuse then arrives at the wedding and injects Rory with truth serum, causing him to confess that he never believed or loved Lydia, and only wanted to marry her for her money. Lydia then punches Rory out cold. Betelgeuse then makes the wedding guests get sucked into their phones and begins his wedding ceremony with Lydia. Wolf and his police force crash in to arrest Betelgeuse, but he freezes them instead, Delores enters the ceremony to confront Betelgeuse. Astrid and Delia read the handbook and draw a door for the sandworm. The sandworm then emerges from the door and attempts to eat Betelgeuse, but he deflects it, and the sandworm eats Delores and Rory whole. When Betelgeuse tells Lydia she must keep her end of the bargain, Lydia and Astrid inform him that entering Lydia in the afterlife violated his contract as well as him violating the rules of the handbook, this causes Betelgeuse to inflate like a balloon. Betelgeuse then pops when Lydia says his name three times.

Wolf now unfrozen takes Delia back to the netherworld. Lydia and Astrid say goodbye to Delia as she leaves. Delia reunites with Charles in the afterlife, albeit have of him since the top of his body was eaten by a shark, but he can still talk as blood squirts out of him. Sometime later, Lydia films her final segment of Ghost House in order to spend more time with Astrid.

Later that night, Lydia has a nightmare about her and Astrid going to Dracula's castle in Transylvania, where Astrid marries a man named Vlad. Lydia then witnesses Astrid give birth to a baby who looks like Betelgeuse and begins murdering the doctors.
