Plot[]

Helen Lyle is an academic who is doing research into urban legends. One of those urban legends that she encounters is about the murderous spirit with a hook for a hand known as Candyman. Helen does not believe in Candyman.

After Helen and her friend Bernadette Walsh say his name five times in the mirror, nothing happens at first. The two of them do research on Candyman by visiting Cabrini-Green, where gangs reside. While there, they meet a woman named Anne-Marie McCoy, who is a single mother. She tells them she just wants to raise her son Anthony, but fears Candyman. Later that day, she learns that Candyman was a 19th century man who was killed by a lynch mob who sawed off his right hand and covered his body in honey, they did this because he was in love with a young rich white woman.

The next day, Helen befriends a little boy named Jake, and they do some more investigation. While in the public restroom, Helen is attacked by a gang. Helen later gets the leader behind bars, and Bernadette tells Helen that her thesis on Candyman will become a published story.

However, to her horror, Candyman appears, Candyman begins a number of grisly slayings. Including Anne-Marie's dog and Bernadette. The police do not believe Helen's explanation that a legendary spirit is behind the killings, so Helen is blamed for all of the murders that Candyman commits. Anne-Marie's baby Anthony is also missing, kidnapped by Candyman.

With her life destroyed, Candyman is the only one who can set Helen free. She escapes the hospital she was sent to a month prior, and goes to Cabrini-Green to confront Candyman, she offers herself in exchange for Anthony's safety. Candyman has finally made Helen his victim, and they go inside a pile of rubble and debris outside of Cabrini-Green. Jake see's what he presumes is Candyman in the debris and he and the other residents set it on fire.

Seeing Anne-Marie in the crowed, Helen impales Candyman with a piece of wood, and takes Anthony out of the fire in order to reunite Anthony with his mother, which she successfully does, while Candyman burns in the fire. Jake later sees Candyman's burned corpse in the fire. Unfortunately, Helen was badly burned in the fire, and she dies. The residents of Cabrini-Green attend her funeral and Jake drops Candyman's hook in her coffin.

Later that night, Helen's ex-husband Trevor grieves over his late wife's death, and she says Helen's name five times in the mirror. To his horror, Helen's ghost appears and murders Trevor by stabbing him multiple times with Candyman's hook.
