Eight Legged Freaks is a 2002 horror comedy movie about giant spiders.
Plot[]
One morning in the town of Prosperity, Arizona, a truck driver carrying toxic waste is driving on the freeway. While driving, he tries to avoid hitting a rabbit that's in the road, but while doing so, one of the barrels filled with toxic waste falls into the water. Later, an exotic spider-farmer named Joshua finds crickets near the toxic waste and takes them so he can feed them to his spiders that he sells.
One week later, a kid named Mike Parker rides his bike to Joshua's farm. Joshua shows him the spiders, including orb weavers, jumping spiders, spitter spiders, a goliath bird eater named Tank, and trap-door spiders, which have started to grow after consuming the crickets, including his lone female which he named Consuela. After Mike leaves, the spiders escape from their enclosures and start attacking Joshua, and eventually kill him.
Sometime later, a man named Chris McCormick returns to Prosperity after not being there for ten years. He has feelings for Mike's mom Sam Parker, who is the sheriff. The Mayor of Prosperity Wade wants to sell every property in town to become a millionaire and store toxic waste in the mines, putting many people out of a job. A couple days later, Mike returns to Joshua's farm, who is nowhere to be seen, and finds a giant spider leg. He tries to tell his mom about what he found, but Sam punishes him for going to Joshua's spider-farm in the first place.
Over the following days, the 200 spiders' height increase to human size, and they gain higher intelligence than average spiders and have Consuela as the leader and Tank as the second in command. They feed on pets in the town, but eventually begin to hunt for people. On a sunny evening, Sam's daughter Ashley makes out with her boyfriend Bret in a truck, but Ashley begins to feel uncomfortable, but Bret refuses to stop kissing her, so she tazes him with a stun gun given to her by Sam, and leaves him stranded in the desert, right as giant jumping spiders begin to chase him. He warns his biker friends about the jumping spiders, but they don't believe him, that is until one of the spiders attacks. The spiders chase the bikers, but eventually catch up to them, but Bret gets away, and most of the jumping spiders are killed in a truck crash, however, some survive, and they chase Bret into the mines. The truck crash explosion knocked out communications in the town, preventing Prosperity from calling for help.
Chris's Aunt Gladys is taken by orb weavers. While looking for her, Chris finds a giant spider leg, and informs Mike and Sam. While there, a giant spider begins webbing Ashley, fortunately, Sam shoots the spider, saving Ashley. Sam calls deputy Pete, and they drive to a local radio host named Harlen in order to warn the town about the spiders since they're nocturnal and begin leaving the mines once night falls. While they don't believe them at first due to sounding farfetched, and the fact that Harlen conspiracy theories about aliens living among people, the spiders sure enough begin attacking the town. Sam tells the townspeople to take refuge at a shopping mall. While there, the people arm themselves against the spiders, who eventually break into the mall to start eating people thanks to Tank breaking down the doors. Some spiders web up victims to bring to Consuela.
Chris, Sam, Mike, Ashley, Bret, and the other survivors go in the mines after being overwhelmed by the spiders while in the mall. Chris gets the idea to blow up the mines with the spiders in them, but first, he tries to find Gladys, who may still be alive since she was taken by an orb weaver. She thankfully is still alive, and Chris gets his aunt out of the cocoon. Unfortunately, they encounter the female orb weaver Consuela, who is the biggest spider of them all. Chris and Gladys try to outrun Consuela on Bret's bike, as she chases them through the mine tunnels while the other spiders follow her. Outside, Sam has trouble setting off the methane gas, but Ashley suggests using the stun gun, which works, and all of the spiders are blown up in the mines and the mall, including Tank and Consuela, who burn to death. All of the survivors are relieved that the spiders are dead. Chris and Sam express their love for each other.
An epilogue with Harlen reveals that gold was found in the mines, putting everybody back to work, making Prosperity wealthy again.
