Late one-night, high school couple Charley Brewster and Amy Peterson are watching Charley's favorite late night program Fright Night hosted by vampire killer Peter Vincent. The two begin kissing, however Charley notices a man carrying a coffin into the vacant house next door. Amy thinks Charley is ignoring her and leaves his house upset. Ever since that night, there have been two murders reported.
The next night, Charley sees thrugh his bedroom window the man that moved into the house next door named Jerry Dandridge, who is biting a naked woman and killing her, while also noticing that Jerry has fangs and long fingernails. He runs to his mom's room to tell her that their new neighbor is a vampire, though she doesn't believe him. The next day at school, Amy and their friend Edward "Evil Ed" Thompson doesn't believe him either. Charley calls the police telling them Jerry might be the suspect of the murders.
When Charley and a police officer arrive at Jerry's house, a man named Billy Cole tells them he's Jerry's roommate and that he's not home. Charley demands the officer to check the basement to see if Jerry's coffin is down there, but the police officer thinks this is a prank and escorts Charley out of Jerry's house. That night, Charley's mom invites Jerry over. Charley is frightened by Jerry's presence and leaves the room. Later, Jerry appears in Charley's room and threatens him by saying to forget about him or he'll kill him. Charley attempts to use a crucifix on Jerry; however, it doesn't work because Charley doesn't have faith. Jerry then tries to kill him by sticking his head out the window which Charley had put nails in earlier. Charley stabs Jerry in the hand, and then he leaves.
The next day, Charley gets the idea to ask Peter Vincent for help. He goes to the studio Vincent works at and explains to him about Jerry, unfortunately, Vincent doesn't believe Charley either telling him that he was playing a character in the movies. Amy and Ed go to see Charley and learn that he truly believes Jerry is a vampire. To help him, Amy pays Vincent to pretend give Jerry holy water and prove to Charley that Jerry isn't a vampire. Charley, Amy, Ed, and Vincent go to Jerry's house after Vincent calls Jerry to inform him of their plan. Jerry drinks the water, but Charley wants Jerry to grab his crucifix instead. As four of them attempt to leave the house, Vincent doesn't see Jerry's reflection in his mirror, finally believing Charley. Jerry knows this is the case when he finds a shard of glass from Vincents mirror on the floor.

Jerry Dandridge.
Charley walks Amy home while Ed leaves the two. Unfortunately, Jerry turns Ed into a vampire, and Ed tries to kill Vincent, but he's able to ward Ed off with a crucifix. Jerry hunts down Charley and Amy, where they end up in a nightclub. Jerry is able to hypnotize Amy in order to lure Charley back to his house. Jerry later seduces Amy and turns her into a vampire, Jerry also intends to make Amy his bride since she resembles his former lover. Vincent finally decides to join Charley in killing Jerry. The two arrive at Jerry's house where they're confronted by Jerry. Charley is able to use his faith in the crucifix to stun Jerry, but Billy knocks Charley out, Vincent runs to Charley's house to see if his mom is home, but is encountered by Ed, who transforms into a wolf, but before he's able to strike, Vincent impales his heart with a stake.
Charley is locked in a room with Amy, who is slowly becoming a vampire. Vincent sneaks into the house to get Charley out of the room. Billy confronts them, but Vincent shoots him. This doesn't kill him however, luckily, he finally dies after Charley impales his heart, causing him to melt until he's nothing but a skeleton. Charley once again uses the crucifix on Jerry as dawn approaches. Jerry then turns into a monstrous bat in order to kill Charley and Vincent, but the sun comes up, so Jerry flies into the basement. Charley and Vincent run into the basement to finish off Jerry, but a now fully transformed Amy tries to prevent them from doing so. They open Jerry's coffin and break all the windows exposing Jerry to the sunlight, finally killing him. Jerry's death causes Amy to transform back into a human.
The movie ends with Charley and Amy watching Peter Vincent on Fright Night, where he does an episode about alien movies. Charley turns off the TV, but notices glowing eyes in Jerry's house. He dismisses it and embraces Amy. However, the glowing eyes appear in the window again, with Ed's disembodied voice laughing.
