"Trick or treat?" -- Jack, Animal Crossing: New Leaf

Jack (Animal Crossing)

Jack is a specter and the self-proclaimed Czar of Halloween who appears once a year on Halloween between the hours of 6:00 PM and 1:00 AM on November 1, which is also his birthday. Interestingly, he does not have a favorite coffee, like most characters have. He has appeared in numerous Animal Crossing titles; however, he was absent from Animal Crossing: Wild World, as were all other holiday-related characters.

As a Specter, it is unknown if he wears a Jack-o-lantern on his head or if it is his real face, although the latter seems the most plausible. This makes him completely indistinguishable from the other villagers, who also will ask for candy. Jack likes to play hide-and-seek, and since other villagers like to dress up like him, he can always be distinguished by unique characteristics. For instance, he is short in stature and has an orange-colored pumpkin on his head, and unlike other villagers also won't chase after the player (with the sole exception of New Leaf).

If one should locate the real Jack during Halloween, he will distribute both creepy objects and spooky furniture, which can only be obtained through him and if you miss it, you either have to wait an entire real life year to try again or reset your system's clock (though cheating in this manner will earn you a reprimand).

  • Many pumpkin characters are named "Jack" through the traditional pumpkin name "Jack O'Lantern". The name comes from an Irish folktale about a man named Stingy Jack.
  • Jack appropriated name could derive from the character Jack Pumpkinhead, from the Oz Fantasy novels, a character with a pumpkin for a head very much like the character in this game.
  • Certain dialect found within Jack's dialogue may suggest a nod to Tim Burton's acclaimed character "Jack Skellington" who similarly proclaims to be a "King of Halloween". The character is the protagonist of the timeless movie, The Nightmare Before Christmas.
