Years later in 1839, Ellen is married to a man named Thomas Hutter, who live happily in Germany in a small town called Wisburg. One day, Thomas' employer Herr Knock tells Thomas to go to a castle in Transylvania as the owner of the castle wishes to move to Germany. After having a disturbing nightmare, Ellen doesn't want Thomas to leave for Transylvania, but he insists that he makes the journey, and Ellen stays with her friend Anna Harding, along with Anna's husband Friedrich and their two daughters Carla and Louise. Thomas travels to Transylvania and stays at an inn in a small village for the night, where the villagers shun him for venturing to the castle. That night, Thomas sees gypsies and other townsfolk going to a grave and impaling the corpse inside it.
The following night, Thomas is taken by a strange figure riding a horse and carriage and they arrive at the castle where he meets its owner, Count Orlok. Thomas is frightened to death by Orlok's appearance but still negotiates with him over dinner, where he accidently cuts himself and blacks out. The next day, Orlok has Thomas sign the contract to make his purchase of the home in Germany official, though he also demands for Thomas' locket. Thomas becomes sick and begs Orlok to leave the castle, but he refuses to let Thomas depart the castle. After falling asleep, Thomas finds bite marks on his chest and tries to escape Orlok's castle. Thomas finds Orlok sleeping in a coffin and attempts to kill him with an axe, but to no avail. Thomas is able to escape the castle and is cared for by a woman in the village who claims that Count Orlok made a deal with the devil, and that led to him becoming a vampire. Count Orlok departs to a ship where his coffin makes the journey to Wisburg, Germany, where he causes a deadly plague on the ship from rats, killing the crew members on board.

On the third night, von Franz lies to Thomas about knowing where Orlok is, and they go to a coffin that Thomas believes Orlok is in. Inside the coffin however is Knock who has become a vampire and is killed. After learning of this deception, Thomas rushes back to the manor to save Ellen.
Back at the manor, Ellen says she will finally be Orlok's bride. The vampire arrives and kisses her. Orlok and Ellen both naked lie in the bedroom where Orlok begins sucking the blood from her heart. Ellen is actually distracting Orlok by letting him feed on her until the sunrise. When the sun finally rises, Orlok screams in agony as the sunlight kills him. Unfortunately, Ellen lost an extremely large amount of her blood after Orlok had sucked it from her chest, so Ellen dies with Orlok as well.
