Poltergeist is a 1982 horror film directed by Tobe Hooper. It was written by Steven Spielberg and Michael Grais. It stars JoBeth Williams, Heather O' Rourke, and Craig T. Nelson.
The film was a box office success. Having been made on an estimated budget of $10,700,000, it went on to earn more than $76,000,000 at movie theaters in the United States. It spawned two sequels, Poltergeist II: The Other Side and Poltergeist III, as well as a barely-related TV series called Poltergeist: The Legacy. A reboot of the movie is currently in the works as of September 2014.
Poltergeist was rated PG by the Motion Picture Association of America for adult situations, language and violence.
A family's home is haunted by a group of ghosts after the youngest daughter, Carol Anne, is summoned by a message from the TV set. The ghosts are friendly, moving objects around to the amusement of everyone but now they are evil and fearsome. After she disappears into a portal inside a closet by the vengeful apparitions, the family has to save their daughter. They team up with paranormal investigators and a psychic medium to do so.
