In its simplest form a warlock costume may consist of a pointy hat and a long robe. A female witch costume can easily be adapted into a male warlock costume, and sometimes the two are considered to be gender-oriented version of the same base costume (i.e., a witch is a female warlock/a warlock is a male witch). A magic wand, a long staff, a broomstick, a book of spells, a stuffed owl, stuffed black cat or toy frog may be carried as props. A false beard and spectacles can help to enhance the costume and help to conceal the wearer's identity.

Because of the decade-long popularity of Blizzard Entertainment's World of Warcraft, many modern Warlock costumes can be derived from these games, especially should the player play a Forsaken, one of the undead.
